Warts

Unsightly and Annoying

What Causes this?

A lesion is a region on the skin that has suffered some sort of damage or abnormality such as an ulcer, tumour or abscess. Individuals may acquire a variety of different benign skin lesions over the course of a lifetime. They come in many forms and can occur at any stage of life.

Cutaneous warts are a common skin infection caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) that most often occur in children and young adults. Medical conditions such as atopic dermatitis and immunosuppression ( a compromised immune system) may increase risk for infection.

Warts are usually transmitted via skin-to-skin contact. Contact with fomites (inanimate objects like sheets, bedding, socks) may be an additional mode of transmission, but the evidence for this is limited.

Symptoms

Lesions and warts appear in several varieties but generally manifest as small bumps or protrusions from the surface of the skin.  Their colour can vary widely from natural skin tone to blue, pink, red, tan to dark brown.

Treatment Options

Depending on the type of lesion or wart, and the severity or stage of the condition, physicians may recommend one or more of the following treatments to cure the patient:

  • Surgical excision
  • Cryotherapy
  • Topical corticosteroid or other anti-fungal medicine
  • GenesisPlus IPL Laser Treatment can be used effectively to treat plantar warts. By targeting the virus directly, the laser destroys the source of the problem immediately. Tiny pulses of light from the GenesisPlus laser pass through the skin. The virus is irradiated without any damage to the surrounding skin. Most people feel a slight warming sensation during the procedure. No pain medication is needed and most people find the treatment very easy to tolerate. You will need about 3 treatments.
